SOFIA BACHVAROVA ‘NOMAD SOULS – ‘The Weighing’ and ‘Bottled Love’ 2012

An in–situ installation with:
sculptures, paintings and ambiance by Sofia Bachvarova
written word by Andrew Cohen
video performance by Sofia Bachvarova and Jean Fowley
aerial performance by Robin Lynch

Sofia Bachvarova is a recent graduate from the New York Academy of Art with a specific interest in on-site installations, which include oil paintings and sculptural elements as well as sound and video projection. Bachvarova is interested in the visceral connection between her ‘spellbound time traps” and the “experiencer”, i.e., the interactive viewer. For her current site-specific installation at 70 Spruce Street, Sofia Bachvarova takes inspiration from Egyptian mythology and architecture and recreates a tomb-like space for the “weighing of souls”. It is love lost and love won that each “soul” must revisit on their way to entry or departure from the present.
